“The plain fact is that the planet does not need more successful people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind. It needs people who live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. And these qualities have little to do with success as we have defined it.” David Orr, from his 1992 book Ecological Literacy: Education and the Transition to a Postmodern World.
The planet does not need more successful people
The world doesn’t need you to play by the traditional rules of success. It doesn’t need you to
- be a real estate tycoon
- or to make a bundle shorting the stock market
- or to accumulate a million dollars in your retirement plan.
People have been doing that for as long there have been people. But we want to live in a world that is full of beauty and passion and opportunity for everyone regardless of where they were born. That world isn’t created by people who are getting by, taking care of themselves, and pursuing traditional success.
That world is created by people who are brave.
The planet needs YOU to be brave
Whatever it is you do… Whether you’re a stay at home mom, working in a gas station or on wall street, blogging, selling real estate or cars, etc.
Whatever it is you do, the world also needs you to have moral courage. You must be willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. This requires that you give. You can give of your time, your money, your talents, your attention, your voice.
But you must give of yourself. You must be brave. We need you.
