It is obvious that man is himself a traveler; that the purpose of this world is not “to have and to hold” but “to give and serve.” Sir Wilfred T. Grenfell
We start our journey in this life with no thing to hold. When we complete this journey we call life, we leave with no thing to hold. In between, we travel from place to place, from relationship to relationship, from experience to experience. What does it mean “to have and to hold” when ultimately holding is impossible? What does it mean to acquire things when nothing is ours to keep?
Although we’ve arrived on this planet with nothing in our possession, we do arrive with plenty to give. We do arrive with the ability to serve. Maybe nothing is ours to keep, but everything is ours to give.
Give, because you’re just traveling through. At the end of the journey, what you’ve acquired will be meaningless, but what you’ve given may just change the world.
