“You can give without loving, but you can never love without giving.”
Robert Louis Stevenson
I admit it. I’ve given my fair share of presents that were chosen without spending very much care or attention. So, while I know I can give without loving, I also know that I have never loved anyone without giving. I’ve given thoughtfully selected presents that were exactly what my husband needed and wanted. I’ve given my best friend a pep talk when she needed it most. I’ve given my cousin a night off by babysitting her daughter. I’ve given presents, time, advice, support, caring to everyone I’ve ever loved.
Can love exist without giving? I don’t know. Does a tree fall in the forest make a sound? I don’t know that either. But I do know that love without giving is pointless. How will people know you love them if you don’t give them anything? And I know that withheld love is a source of great pain to the person not giving it.
Love, in order, to flourish must be brought out and shown to the world. It must be acted upon, and it must be given away. The more that is given the more love you have to give.
Giving is an act of love. Giving is love in action.
We love our family and friends most. But we love all kinds of other things. What do you love? Pets and animals? Nature? A just world filled with equal opportunity regardless of where someone was born? Music and art? Our fellow man? Our freedom?
Give to what you love, because it makes your love matter and it makes your love grow. Give your time, money, and talents to everything you love.
