Alas for those that never sing,
But die with all their music in them!
Nay, grieve not for the dead alone
Whose song has told their hearts’ sad story,–
Weep for the voiceless, who have known
The cross without the crown of glory!
Oliver Wendell Holmes, “The Voiceless”
We’re not getting out of here alive. One day, we’ll be dead and gone. It’s not death that’s the tragedy: it’s not living. It’s those who haven’t used their voices, sung their songs, played their music that I grieve for the most. What a loss for them and for the world.
We all have our cross to bear, because life is tough and full of pain. But there is also glory in life, and the glory comes from giving of yourself to create your music. Make it beautiful music that we can all hear.
