There are 7 billion people on this planet. Right now some of them are on their knees in prayer. Some are ecstatically jumping up and down in celebration. Some are weighed down with cares and difficulties. Some are crying with joy as they welcome a new life onto the planet. Some are crying with sadness as they say goodbye to a loved one who has died.
Every conceivable human experience and emotion is happening somewhere right now in some corner of this world.
You are just one of those 7 billion
On this planet, there are mountains towering 10‘s of thousands of feet over the ocean where the temperature is so cold and the air so thin that people cannot survive more than a few moments unless they brought with them extreme cold weather clothing and oxygen tanks.
On this planet, there are places so hot and dry that people cannot survive for more than a couple days unless they brought with them plenty of water.
On this planet, there are places so deep under the water that we can’t reach them without the most advanced and specialized equipment.
In between these places are vibrant forests, lush grasslands, plentiful lakes, peaceful rivers, rolling hills and the places we live out our daily lives.
You live on a tiny corner of this big world
This world is a magnificent tapestry of people and places. You are a single thread within that tapestry. But without your thread, the entire picture changes. You are both incredibly small and incredibly important.
Being humble keeps life in perspective. What’s more important: accumulating for your own small life or participating in something bigger than you? being brave? standing up for what’s right? connecting meaningfully with another person? being generous?
Give, because it reminds you that because you are small you can focus on what’s really important.
