I really should donate. I really should volunteer.
I want to donate. I want to volunteer, but…
- I don’t know where to donate.
- I don’t have the time to volunteer.
- I don’t have enough money.
- My donation won’t make a difference.
- When I have more time and/or money, I will…
- If I won the lottery, I would…
The reasons we put off volunteering or donating are endless. We mean well. We really do want to give, but the circumstances in our lives are never quite perfect.
The little voice in the back of my head asks quietly but insistently, “You’ve been given so much, have you done enough for others? Are you making an impact on the world? Will it matter that you lived?”
At the end of the year, I try to make up for my lack of donating throughout the rest of the year. I look through the shiny brochures and read the poignant appeals. I look at my budget, and donate what I can. But it is Christmas time after all, and I have a lot of other demands on my money. And even though I donate as much as I can, it’s less than I would have liked. The little voice in my head says, “You could have and should have done more.”
Give NOW, because you can stop feeling guilty. Appease that voice in the back of your head by doing something, anything, even if it’s tiny, now and every month. You’ll feel better!
