Our People With Compassion for Pets members will have a difficult choice to make next month as we have three great charities up for consideration. We know that individually, it would be impossible for us to donate $700 to a charity, so we feel great that together we can make a BIG impact on one of these charities. Here’s a little about our nominees:
Freedom Service Dogs
Freedom Service Dogs, located in Englewood, Colorado, was established in 1987. They have received national attention in the past several years for their work with military veterans. Their mission is to train dogs to aid disabled military veterans. All dogs in the program are rescued from shelters.
These amazing dogs assist veterans who have become disabled during service, who have developed PTSD or other psychological trauma, or who have developed medical problems later in life after their service. Find Freedom Service Dogs online at www.freedomservicedogs.org and learn about the program from veterans whose lives have been transformed by their service dog.
Colorado is lucky to have PetAid. They are a nonprofit veterinary hospital providing a few different services to Colorado residents. Caring for our pets can get quite expensive, and PetAid assists low income people with subsidized vet care or by reimbursing vets who’ve provided care below cost. PetAid brings veterinary care to people who are home bound or otherwise unable to bring their animal to the hospital. And they are critical to providing support for pets during natural or man made disasters.
Rocky Mountain Raptor Program
I think everyone in Northern Colorado knows about the Rocky Mountain Raptor Program. They were founded in 1979 and since then have become the premier place for rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing injured birds of prey back into the wild. They’ve amassed a small army of volunteers without whom their work would not be feasible. They care for about 275 birds each year and have an extensive education and public outreach program to help promote respect and understanding of wild animals.
