Some things every person must have and do in their life. Every person must meet their needs for food, shelter, and safety to the best of their abilities. Every person must find a way to feel significant and important. Every person must connect with other human beings. These are musts. All of these are worth accomplishing.
In my early 30’s, I had been moderately successful in meeting these needs. It wasn’t a bad life. I had achieved physical security, owned my home and had money in the bank. I found a way to feel important in the world through my career and educational achievements. I had friends, family, and a significant other.
And yet, a subtle, nagging thought followed me. It turned up at quiet moments before I went to sleep. It drove me to accomplish more at work and stay busier and busier. It was a question that I could not lose and I could not answer.
“Is this all there is?”
The persistence of this question led me to quit my job and spend the next year and a half of my life “discovering” myself. Certainly, not everyone needs to quit their job nor does everyone have that luxury. But I needed to, and I had that luxury. So, I did. And the truth that I discovered was really quite simple:
There is more to life.
I had been meeting my basic needs, but life is meant to be fulfilling. And in order to feel fulfilled, I needed to contribute to others. Believe it or not, that was a challenge for me. I’d often felt insignificant in my ability to change the world, to contribute meaningfully to someone’s life. I mean, the world’s problems were so big, and I was so small. What could I possible do that could matter?
Then it occurred to me, if we all have this human need to contribute to others, what if we met this need together? What if we came together in communities? What if a group of people doing something small but doing it consistently could add up to something HUGE? What if I could be a part of group that could donate $10,000?
Join a Change Gang, because, like me, you want the world to be a better place because you were here, because you want to do it with fun, friendly, positive people, and because you want to feel great about where you donate money. Join a Change Gang because there is more to life than just meeting our basic needs, because life is meant to be fulfilling.
