But not just presents for our loved ones. This time of year we step outside our daily grind and our myopic focus on our own well-being. Our spirit soars, we look out to others and to the world, and we want to share our blessings and abundance with those who are less fortunate than ourselves.
The Holiday Giving Deluge
And charities know this about us. In the few short weeks between Thanksgiving and New Years, charities plan to raise 30-40% of their annual budget from generous people like you.
That means we are bombarded from every possible avenue with requests for our time and money. They stand in front of stores. They call us on the phone. They mail us complimentary address labels and “gift” catalogs.
We see them on t.v. talking about their charities. We read their FB posts and emails asking us to donate. We hear our friends and family members talking about where they plan to give this holiday.
In all this noise, how do we know what’s the right donation to make?
The Importance of Holiday Giving
Your donation is a big deal.
It doesn’t matter if your donation is small or big. It doesn’t matter if you’re donating time or money.
Your donation is a big deal, because you are part of a huge movement of people in this world who are giving this holiday and together your donation is MASSIVE! How big is it? In the ball park of $687 million dollars big.
Holiday Giving Simplified
Making better donations isn’t that hard when you know what to look for and what to ask.
The first rule of thumb is to never donate over the phone. Simply say, “While I’d like to donate, I never donate over the phone. I’ve written down your name and I’ll check you out. Thanks for calling.” Then hang up. I know it can be hard, but do it.
Second rule, you MUST research a charity before you donate. Every time. No exceptions. Otherwise, you risk throwing your money away or, even worse, hurting the very people you want to help.
But, I know researching is hard, which is why I wrote the Holiday Giving Survival Guide. It has a 3 Level Evaluation Guide that you can scale up or down according to your needs, so you can quickly and confidently evaluate a charity before you send them your hard earned dollars. It also covers the traditional and popular holiday donation opportunities like canned food and toy drives.
