I’m nervous and excited to announce a new feature here at Change Gangs’ blog. Every day in 2013 I’ll post a different answer to the question
I hope this exercise will deepen my understanding of why we should give, and I hope you’ll enjoy these inspirational meditations, too. When you find a reason that makes sense to you leave me a comment, and let me know!
Day 1, Reason 1: Give Because… You Were Given
The first gift you received was not a gift you asked for — you were given the gift of life.
Next you were given love, food, shelter, toys, education and entertainment, and you grew from a helpless infant to a young adult capable of surviving on your own. Your parents gave you music lessons, rides to soccer practice, breakfast, lunch, dinner, clothing, and the list goes on and on. Can we ever list all the things our parents have given us?
Teachers gave you knowledge, a love for science or books, and homework — lots and lots of homework! Friends gave you laughter, memories, and something to do on Friday night. All around is a large and often invisible network of people who give you tangible and intangible gifts that helped you live and learn. None of these people in your life were perfect, and they gave to you what they were capable of giving.
In return for everything you received when you were in no position to provide for yourself and not capable of giving much in return, you have a karmic balance to resolve.
And since the world was not created equal some of us received more than others. Some received more love, more stability, more education, more opportunities. The more you were given the more you need to give. Got great health? That’s a gift not everyone shares. Got a sharp mind? an education? a skill for talking with people? an athletic ability or musical talent? Your gifts are numerous as are the gifts you can give to others.
So, give because you were given so much, and so that others have something to give, too.
