We know there is never a good time to donate for an emergency, and that’s why a portion of our monthly donations is diverted into an Emergency Relief Fund. This Emergency Relief Fund is set aside specifically to donate to man-made or natural disasters. Any Change Gang member can request that we donate this fund, and after researching the charity thoroughly (because, that’s what we do here at Change Gangs), our members then get to vote. If 50% of our members agree, then the Emergency Relief Fund is donated to that charity to help save lives.
One of our members wanted to us to consider donating to Syria. Last week, in the Idlib province, northern Syria around 100 people—including children—are reported dead after a suspected chemical gas attack. This is the latest travesty in a 6 year conflict that has taken 400,000 lives and left 13.5 million people in need of aid.
After thoroughly researching The International Rescue Committee, our members got to express their opinion. We all agreed, and we are making a $500 donation to the Syrian relief fund at the IRC. Our donation may be used to cover medical care costs for those suffering from the impact of chemical weapons. It could be used to provide protective clothing and training for paramedics and doctors so they can treat chemical attack victims effectively and safely. Since the Syrian government has targeted medical facilities, our donation could fund the opening of or supplying of new mobile health centers. Or it could be disbursed in the form of cash grants so a Syrian can buy food or pay rent.
In any case, our hearts are breaking for the people in Syria, we hope their suffering ends soon, and we are glad that we could do a little something to help. You, too, can join a virtual giving circle and be a part of this amazing philanthropic community.
