Recently, I looked back at the wonderful charities we’ve supported over the last 15 months and I was so proud. I contributed $25/month, and together, we’ve donated a total of $2,367.50 to these organizations.
Thanks so much to my fellow giving circle members for making this possible! You’ve proved that a little bit from a lot of people is a BIG deal!
June 2011: Donation to Detroit Dog Rescue
They’re tackling a massive stray dog problem in Detroit. According to Detroit Dog Rescue (DDR), there are 50,000 – 100,000 stray dogs running loose in the streets of Detroit, and only 23 animal care workers to rescue them. Over 90% of dogs picked up in Detroit are euthanized!
We donated to them when they were quite new. They had not yet received their 501c3 status and were in the midst of a multi million dollar capital campaign to build the first No Kill Shelter in Detroit. Since then, they’ve taken Detroit by storm and have had a number of high profile media opportunities including a recent appearance on MSNBC.
The founders were both involved in entertainment and have a lot of skill at promoting DDR. Even though there are still many dogs in Detroit in need of help, they now have amazing advocates for them working to not just to save individuals dogs but to change the culture of the city to one that values dogs.
September 2011: Donation to Longhopes Donkey Shelter
This is one of my personal favorites, and it might just be because donkeys are so darn cute!
Donkeys have often been treated as disposable animals– good for as long as they can work. Located in Bennett, Colorado, this shelter rescues donkeys that are neglected and abused and brings those donkeys to their facility to rehabilitate and find them a new home. They have rescued over 500 donkeys and adopted 450 of them in the last 10 years.
December 2011: Donation to Denkai Animal Sanctuary
Denkai Animal Sanctuary is close to the hearts of some of our members because for some of us, it is our local No Kill Animal Shelter. I personally have adopted a dog from them and some of our members have volunteered their time for the shelter.
Denkai provides a home to more than 200 horses, dogs, cats and other animals received from shelters, rescue groups and owners no longer able to care for their pets from around the United States. They have two facilities, one located near Greeley, CO and the other in Grover, Colorado surrounded by the beautiful and serene Pawnee National Grasslands.
March 2012: Donation to Companion Animal Advocates
Companion Animal Advocates was brought to our attention from our New Jersey member who knows the women who run this great organization through her dog agility classes. When they discovered that people were surrendering their pets to the animal shelters because they couldn’t afford to feed them, they created a program to provide free pet food and kitty litter to low income people.
Since 2008, they have provided 268,720 bowls of food. In addition, they have a low cost and no cost spay and neutering services and a program that provide pet oxygen masks to local fire departments and EMT’s, who are prevented by law from using state funding to purchase supplies that don’t specifically save human lives.
June 2012: Donation to Kindness Ranch
There aren’t many options for animals used in laboratory experiments. Many of them are simply slaughtered when their usefulness is up. Kindness Ranch gives these animals a chance for a new life.
As a sanctuary, many former lab animals will live out their lives on this 1,000 acre ranch in Wyoming taken care of by loving hands and given the room to run and do the kinds of things animals are supposed to do.
Some of their animals are available for adoption, but many of the dogs and cats require quite a bit of rehabilitation as they are not used to things like leashes, going to the bathroom outside, and friendly affection from people.
