Why Give Answer 12: Give, because… You don’t need another sweater

It’s cute. It’s on sale. But do you really need another sweater (or pair of shoes or sparkly top or whatever)?

Buying that new sweater will provide some temporary pleasure. But what’s temporary pleasure compared to fulfillment?

Temporary pleasure loses its steam even before your sweater loses its shape. Fulfillment lasts a lifetime. It’s a moment you can look back on for the rest of your life, and say, “I did that important thing.” And smile a little bit. Maybe even give yourself a little pat on the back.

The path to great happiness doesn’t lie through the mall, and the money you could have spent on a sweater– a sweater that is destined to fade, pill, and be thrown away– that money can change or save someone’s life.

Give because you don’t need another sweater. You need to feel fulfilled, and fulfillment happens when you become a better person and the world becomes a better place.

p.s. If you do need a sweater and/or you’re already feeling good about your contribution to the world, then go ahead and buy a sweater :)
